E-Bike Battery Risks
Lithium batteries used in e-bikes need to be treated with care. They are subject to a condition called thermal runaway in which a rapidly increasing temperature can cause a fire or even an explosion. In our shop we never leave a battery to charge overnight by itself. We only charge them when someone is present and usually with a fan blowing on the charger and battery. Treat it as you would a lit candle, never leave it unattended.
Here are some safety tips from Estero Fire Rescue:
-
Use the charger designed for your device and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
-
Don't use batteries or chargers that are damaged or show signs of overheating
-
Avoid charging batteries near exits or where they could block your way out.
-
Keep batteries away from extreme heat and direct sunlight.
-
Never ignore signs of a battery problem, such as swelling, unusual heat, leaking, odors or hissing sounds.
-
If a battery begins smoking or catches fire, get outside and call 911.
-
Most importantly, call 911 as soon as you discover a fire or emergency.
